Occasionally, a patient’s jawbone is not tall enough to support an implant. If this occurs, your dentist will probably recommend bone grafting. In a bone grafting procedure, a dental surgeon will implant a bone substance under the gum. In most cases, the surgeon will use the patient’s own bone, although sometimes a bone transplant is necessary. Over the course of several months, the bone will fuse to the existing jaw and provide a more appropriate environment for supporting dental implants.
